The Center for Civil Rights History & Research is on a mission to chronicle, preserve, and share the profound contributions of South Carolina to the American Civil Rights Movement. Established in 2015, our Center has become a model of scholarship, training, education and public engagement, thanks to supporters like you.

At the heart of our mission are students.

With your support in helping us reach our $10,000 anniversary goal, we can expand our efforts to inspire future generations and provide meaningful opportunities for students of all ages.

Student Research & Professional Development

Through competitive internships and research programs, our young scholars gain hands-on experience in archival research, digital humanities, public history, and scholarly presentation. They travel to archives, present at academic conferences, and contribute to exhibitions and public programs that reach audiences statewide.

Their research directly shapes our exhibitions and becomes part of the public record—informing how civil rights history is understood and taught.

Your support funds research travel, conference participation, and transformative professional opportunities that launch careers in law, education, academiaand public service.

Exhibitions & Cultural Partnerships

Student research lives far beyond the classroom.

Exhibitions like Justice for All have traveled more than 700 miles across South Carolina, bringing civil rights history to communities statewide. Digital projects such as Briggs v. Elliott: From Clarendon County to the Supreme Court extend that impact even further.

Through partnerships with leading cultural institutions, we present installations and programs that engage K–12 students, college students, and educators alike.

These exhibitions are visited by thousands of students each year. For younger audiences, they offer meaningful encounters with living history. For university students, they iterate the power of research, interpretation, and public engagement.

Your support funds K-12 student trips to our exhibitionsthe creation of educational materials, and allows our exhibitions to travel far and wide.

Why Your Support Matters

As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we are building the foundation for the decades ahead. Your support fuels student research, expands access to civil rights history, and equips the next generation to carry this work forward.

A gift to the Center for Civil Rights History and Research is an investment in students—and in the future of civil rights scholarship nationwide. Together, we can shape a legacy that endures for generations.
