The University of South Carolina Student Chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is preparing for the 2027 SAE Formula Competition, one of the premier collegiate engineering challenges in the country. This hands-on program gives students the opportunity to design, build, test, and compete with a Formula-style race car at Michigan International Speedway. Through this experience, students apply classroom knowledge to real engineering challenges involving performance, safety, manufacturing, and business strategy.

The team is organized into seven specialized groups: aerodynamics, chassis, electrical, powertrain, suspension, wheel hub and axle, and business. This structure allows students from multiple disciplines to develop both technical expertise and leadership skills. Team members collaborate to solve complex design problems, manage timelines and budgets, and ensure the vehicle meets rigorous competition standards. Students are currently transitioning from previous electric vehicle designs to an internal combustion format, expanding their technical knowledge and fabrication experience.

Beyond engineering, the business team plays a vital role in marketing, sponsorship outreach, and financial planning. Students gain valuable experience communicating technical concepts to industry professionals and building relationships with corporate partners. This combination of technical and professional development prepares students for successful careers in the automotive and mobility industries.

Your support directly impacts the team’s ability to compete at the highest level. Contributions help fund materials, specialized components, testing equipment, travel expenses, and competition registration. Every gift strengthens hands-on learning opportunities and helps students represent the University of South Carolina on a national stage.

By investing in the SAE Formula team, you are supporting innovation, teamwork, and experiential education that shapes the next generation of engineers and industry leaders.
