The Carolina Autism and Neurodevelopment Research Center (CAN) is making life better for people with neurodiverse needs, no matter their age or their unique condition.

Our research, education and outreach programs are leading to earlier diagnosis, success in school and college, better health for people across the lifespan, and a better understanding of how to help all people reach their potential.

Here are just a few ways your support helps CAN make a difference for individuals and families with neurodiversity.

Early Diagnosis and Intervention

Our research explores early, accurate diagnosis that gives parents peace of mind knowing their child can receive services that support a lifetime of learning and achievement. While we provide limited services within our research now, plans are underway to launch an Autism and Neurodevelopment Clinic that will offer comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services from experts working together across disciplines. The clinic also will train students as they become educators and health care providers, expanding our impact throughout the community.

Success at USC

Hundreds of USC students are navigating university life with unique needs related to autism, ADHD and other forms of neurodivergence. CAN is creating ASCEND@CAROLINA, a first-of-its kind program to help these students reach their potential. ASCEND will provide coaching for academic skills, social connection and career development for students pursuing a University of South Carolina degree.

Ongoing Research and Outreach

CAN’s research explores questions related to neurodevelopment, autism, ADHD, Down syndrome, fragile X, intellectual disabilities and more. By exploring fundamental questions and new applied interventions, we are making breakthroughs for understanding, education and health for people with these conditions.

But research is about so much more than conducting a study. Families involved with our research join a community of support. We offer diagnostic services, interventions, advice, respite care and educational resources so no family has to navigate neurodiversity alone.

Your support during Give 4 Garnet helps us establish and expand these programs to make a difference for USC students, South Carolina families and individuals with autism and neurodevelopmental disorders everywhere.
