First - Generation Center

First-Gen Center

The University of South Carolina is committed to providing a supportive and enriching academic environment for all students. Over 20% of USC students identify as first-generation, meaning neither of their parents has earned a four-year degree. First-generation students face unique challenges in navigating the college landscape, which can impact their academic success. The First-Generation Genter serves as a centralized hub to support students with initiatives  such as:

  • A Faculty-led living and learning community for 151 first-generation students.
  • Mentoring program that pairs first-generation students with faculty, staff, and older peers.
  • Intentional programming to increase student involvement in educational experiences.

“The First-Gen Center has been a guiding light for me as a first-generation student. They have given me the tools, support, and encouragement to navigate challenges I never thought I could overcome.”

“The First-Gen Living & Learning Community has allowed me to connect to likeminded individuals with similar backgrounds as mine, allowing me to step out of my comfort zone and meet new people as well as teaching me how to make academic/business connections.”

-Ethan

“As a first-gen resident assistant, I’ve seen firsthand how the First-Gen Center and Living & Learning Community provide resources that help smooth the path for students like me. The networking dinners and workshops are fantastic opportunities that foster connections and provide essential tools for success. Being part of this community has given me the confidence and support to thrive in college, and I’m excited to see more students benefit from these opportunities moving forward.”
