Root Cause at the UofSC School of Medicine Greenville
Root Cause, a student-led group at the UofSC School of Medicine Greenville, seeks to educate, inspire and connect community members through a series of health fairs to promote wellness and improve access to health care.
Inspired by the missions of both UofSC SOMG and Prisma Health to improve the health of the communities we serve, UofSC SOMG students set out to develop a program to address the health disparities in Greenville, particularly for the residents of the Dunean community. The Dunean community, a neighborhood adjacent to the UofSC SOMG, is an at-risk community with a high rate of poverty, diabetes and obesity and low rates of access to health care. Student leaders at the SOMG formed Root Cause in 2018 to address the lack of community cohesiveness and to remove barriers to healthcare and preventive care in the Dunean community. Since its founding, Root Cause has provided a series of community-focused health fairs throughout the Greenville community to address the biggest challenges that face our health care system. By targeting improved access to health resources and prevention, Root Cause aims to grow a healthier Greenville.
