Housed at the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health, The Community Health Worker Institute was created to help address South Carolina’s existing health inequities and improve access to care across all communities in our state. CHWs are trusted, frontline public health professionals with a deep understanding and lived experience with the communities they serve. CHWs connect health care, social resources, and the patient’s home and community environment to improve health outcomes. They also assist high-need, high-priority communities by addressing systemic issues and being voices for their communities. The Community Health Worker Institute trains CHWs, provides technical assistance to help organizations integrate CHWs into their work utilizing best practices, and helps advance CHW evaluation and policy.
