Field Geology (GEOL 500) is a ~30-day off-campus field experience in Colorado and Utah that forms the required 4-credit-hour capstone course of the undergraduate Geological Sciences B.S. degree. Students collect geologic observations and data to create geological maps. This immersive engagement crystallizes much of the material introduced during the major course offerings of the Geological Sciences major in ways not achievable in the classroom.
Geology field camp is a self-sufficient mobile enterprise, wherein students and staff live and work out of tents and are responsible for all food, gear, leave-no-trace ethics, and all camp maintenance. Although challenging, this living-learning mode minimizes logistical costs while optimizing pedagogical and logistical flexibility. This experience is incredibly empowering and can be transformative for many students. Moreover, students develop mastery in field skills that many employers view as critical for successful careers in the geosciences (AGI "Status of the Geoscience Workforce", 2019).
