USC Lancaster’s travel study program has provided opportunities for students and faculty to travel both within the US and abroad since 2004. Students have had opportunities to travel to such venues as China, Italy, the United Kingdom, New Orleans, and the Outer Banks. A variety of course credit has been associated with these trips, including such topics as public health, biology, art, drama, foreign language and history.
Challenges
Many USCL students have had very limited travel opportunities in their lives, and quite a few have never traveled beyond the Carolinas when they begin their college experience. The vast majority have never traveled abroad. Moreover, many students find the cost of travel study to be prohibitive, and USC Lancaster currently offers only very limited travel study aid. Travel is of paramount importance in developing well-rounded students with a broad world-view and understanding of cultural, religious, ethnic, ethical, and political differences among the peoples and places of our world. Although these topics can be taught and discussed in the classroom, actually experiencing and witnessing these differences result in more profound understanding and cross-cultural empathy.
USC Lancaster would greatly benefit from gifts designated to support Travel Study Scholarships. Any gift you make to the Educational Foundation of USC Lancaster will create a profound impact!
